Fun Stuff

We at Folk Society like to think that we are happy, friendly, shiney people. And what do happy, friendly people do better than socials? After dancing on Mondays and band practice on Fridays we oftenfunstuff head down to The Imperial for a glass of 'lemonade', a chat and, more often than not, general silliness. On top of our Monday night fun, once a month or so, we tend to head over to The Old Firehouse for pizza and a good time. And that's not forgetting our Thursday night sessions!

Less formally, you will find us out and about all over the place. As well as trekking off to strange parts of the country for the annual Inter-Varsity Folk Dance Festival we have had a ceilidh on the beach at Exmouth, dancing in a service station and even a committee meeting under a dining table. Many of us go to the Great Western Ceilidhs in Exeter and, during the summer, the more intrepid members can be seen at folk festivals from Sidmouth to Whitby.

Even when we're not dancing, playing or thinking folk, you'll often find us socialising in various watering holes, cinemas or beaches. Ask anyone who those slightly crazy people over there are, and they'll tell you: That's Folk Soc.

If you're curious, but a little shy, have a look at the lovely Sinéad's recordings first- if anything can sum up the spirit of Folk Soc, it's this website.

Pigasus

The Band with Wings!

Pigasus are the lively energetic ceilidh band of Exeter University Folk Society who play for the Folk Society ceilidhs throughout the year. They keep themselves busy the rest of the year by playing at pub gigs, weddings and can sometimes be found busking on the streets of Exeter and Topsham.

They are a friendly group who welcome all (Practices 8-10pm Fridays in Knightley Seminar Room). Every instrument is welcome, from Cajuns to Double Bases.

The band are available for private functions either as a full ceilidh band or in smaller ensembles.

Songs we like

No folk society would be complete without at least one person putting down their pint and mangling The Wild Rover. But there are many songs we very much like:

I like the Flowers    Red is the Rose Spanish Ladies
Land of the Silver Birch   Home boys, Home   Shoals of Herring
I'll tell me Ma  Roll the Old Chariot Along   Braxis Navy
The Keeper  South Australia Skye Boat Song
Matty Groves    Johnny was a Paratrooper   Wild Mountain Thyme
Bold Sir Rylas   The Two Magicians    Fields of Athenry

These are just a few and you're welcome to bring your own or just come to listen and join in.
